6/22/13

I haven't posted in a while for lack of time, and I express my regrets. I have online school and sleeping and eating and Netflix to worry about haha. But Thursday was a good day and I'd like to talk about it.

An extracurricular I have is gymnastics. I started gymnastics in September/October 2012 and have recently joined a team. Since we're in off-season, we've been doing conditioning and on Tuesday, I had decided to quit gymnastics because I couldn't handle all the exercises. I have shin splints (basically the swelling of the muscles by my shins because little fibers of my shin bones are lodging into them and causing uncomfortable pain when doing anything with my legs), but since it's summer vacation, I have literally stayed in bed everyday watching Netflix, only leaving the bed to eat and go to the bathroom, so my shin splints have been getting a lot better. But on Tuesday, the cardio we were doing was so hard for me, and I just couldn't run anymore, so I actually lied and said I had to stop because my shins were hurting. I decided I was going to quit. But that day was the first time since I had joined gymnastics that I had held my handstand on the floor. I held it for may 4 seconds but that was 3.8 seconds longer than I usually hold it.

Then on Thursday, it was so much easier. I had an easier time running and warming up and then we had open gym because they had to work out a locker situation. We got to choose an event (beam, bars, floor, or vault) and work on something we've already been taught. I decided to go to bars because I needed to get my chin up pullover, a skill I should have already had. AND I GOT IT ON THE FIRST TRY AND I CAN DO THEM NOW! It was amazing! Then, I went to floor and there was this thing where we had to stand next to a canyon block (tall, sturdy mat) and jump onto it IN our splits, and I got it on the second try AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE MY SPLITS! I was also able to do a snapback cartwheel, I believe it's called. And I perfected my handstand forward roll, something I have never been able to do (I usually just land on my back).

I guess the moral, if there is one, is to never give up just because things are hard. No matter how hard it is, keep going. You'll surprise yourself.
